As Orbera was approved in Europe several years prior to FDA approval in the United States, doctors like Dr Costil have had more years of experience with balloons than any physician in the US.
Hence my interaction with my colleagues in Europe has impacted me with additional knowledge and expertise that I’ll be utilizing for our patients at AMG.
In Europe, there are more balloon options that are being performed routinely that are yet to be FDA approved such as Elipse and Spatz balloon systems. Obalon is also available in Europe.
One of the most eye opening discoveries I made was that in-spite of having these other balloon options, physicians like Dr Costil have experientially found Orbera superior in terms of efficacy and safety.
Though we offer all balloons that are FDA approved at AMG, including Orbera, Obalon and ReShape, it’s been my experience that Orbera again leads in efficacy and safety.
The idea of a swallowable balloon in Obalon is intriguing but offers very underwhelming weight loss.
